About the names
52,813 names, every one of them given to real babies and recorded by a national statistics office.
Where they come from
Nothing in the deck was invented for a list. The names are taken from the birth registers published by four statistics offices, and each name carries how often it was given and where it ranked.
England and Wales
Office for National Statistics
39,380
Scotland
National Records of Scotland
1,929
Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency
986
United States
Social Security Administration
28,638
The registers overlap, so a name in several of them is still one card. That is why those four figures add up to more than the 39,454 UK and 28,638 US totals, and more than the 52,813 names in the deck.

What we added
The registers publish counts and ranks, and no etymology at all. Where a card shows an origin or a meaning, that is our own editorial work: 255 names carry one so far, and the rest show what the registers do say.
•
Counts and ranks come from the registers, unchanged.
•
Origins and meanings are ours, and are not part of the register data.
